The term “vitamin G” has a fascinating history with two primary meanings.
1. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
The most common and historically recognized meaning of “vitamin G” is riboflavin, which is now known as vitamin B2.
- Early Discoveries: In the early days of vitamin research (around the 1920s and 1930s), scientists were identifying different water-soluble factors within what was initially called the “B complex.” They were looking for specific compounds that prevented certain diseases and promoted growth.
- The “G Complex”: Researchers like Eddy and Dalldorf (1937) defined the “G complex” as a group of factors that included flavins and pellagra-preventive factors (niacin and pyridoxine).4 The “G” was used to denote the growth-promoting factors that were separable from the beriberi preventing complex (vitamin B1).
- Reclassification: As scientists were able to isolate and identify the specific chemical compounds, the naming system was standardized. The American name “vitamin G” was eventually replaced by the British name “vitamin B2,” and the chemical name riboflavin became the universally accepted term for this nutrient. This was part of a larger effort to create a consistent naming system for all vitamins, as many substances initially thought to be vitamins were later found to be non-essential for humans or were duplicates of other known vitamins.
2. Modern and Informal Meanings
More recently, the term “vitamin G” has been used in a different, more informal context to refer to the benefits of nature and gratitude.
- “G” for “Green”: In psychology and wellness, “vitamin G” can stand for “green” and refers to the positive psychological and physical effects of exposure to nature, also known as “earthing” or “grounding.” This concept suggests that being in natural environments helps reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and boost overall well-being.9\
- “G” for “Gratitude”: The term has also been used to describe the emotional and physical benefits of practicing gratitude. Studies have linked gratitude to lower blood pressure, improved sleep, and a reduced risk of mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
Prosper and be in health.
